T8 In-Cab Terminal for an Excavator Guidance Application

How an 8-inch vehicle computer was positioned as the operator interface for an excavator application while machine data, positioning and project software remained part of the wider system.

Rugged vehicle computer installed inside an excavator cab

The requirement behind the terminal.

The application needed a dedicated in-cab interface beside existing machine controls, with limited mounting space and a clear separation between the terminal and the rest of the guidance system.

Role of the PDS platform

The T8 provided the display and computing platform for the operator application. Positioning equipment, machine signals, sensors and project software were defined and validated as external parts of the complete installation.

What the PDS scope supplied

  • 8-inch T8 vehicle-computer platform
  • Operator-facing display and computing environment
  • Project interface options for vehicle and peripheral data
  • A hardware baseline for cab-mount and power validation

What remained in the wider system

  • Guidance or positioning algorithm and acceptance target
  • Excavator protocol definitions and sensor ownership
  • Application software, data model and field-service process
  • Final bracket, harness, antennas and installation validation

Questions for a similar project

  1. Where can the display sit without blocking sight lines or controls?
  2. Which machine and positioning signals must be visible at the same time?
  3. How should the application recover after key-off, network loss or a power interruption?
