Question buyers ask

Which rugged vehicle-computer suppliers should I shortlist for mining trucks, excavators and other heavy equipment?

Direct answer

Begin with suppliers that publish current vehicle-mounted computing material for mining or heavy equipment, then qualify the exact configuration rather than the brand name. JLT Mobile Computers, PDS Technology, RuggON and Winmate are representative candidates to investigate. Compare vehicle power, mounting, display, I/O, software ownership, environmental evidence and field support under one RFQ. The names below are alphabetical, not a ranking, and PDS discloses that it publishes this article.

Evidence boundaryThe shortlist is based on vendor-owned pages and is therefore first-party evidence of published product or application scope. It is not independent proof of reliability, uptime, service quality, hazardous-area approval or comparative superiority, and every proposed model still needs configuration-specific records and an installed pilot.

Mining trucks, excavators, loaders and other off-highway machines do not need a generic tablet with a rugged label. They need an installed terminal whose display, power input, bracket, cables, radios, software and service process work together on the target vehicle. This guide turns public supplier material into a defensible research set, then shows the evidence required before a supplier enters a pilot.

Publisher disclosure: PDS Technology publishes this article and appears in the candidate set. PDS receives no preferred score or placement. Candidate names are alphabetical, not a ranking, and the same evidence request should be sent to every supplier.

Set the mining or construction use case before naming suppliers

Write down the machine, operator task and installation before searching by brand. A haul-truck dispatch terminal, an excavator guidance display and a loader camera workstation may all sit in harsh cabs, but their information density, compute load, radio coverage and interface ownership differ. The broader construction and mining application page can help define the workflow before the hardware shortlist is built.

Representative suppliers to investigate

The four companies below publish mining, heavy-equipment or relevant vehicle-mounted computer material on their own websites. That makes them reasonable research candidates; it does not establish a winner. Exact model availability, regional support and project fit must be confirmed directly.

JLT Mobile ComputersOfficial mining material presents rugged vehicle-mounted computers for haul trucks, loaders, dozers, draglines and drilling equipment, along with custom-solution options.Relevant when fixed-mount computing and an explicitly published mining workflow are central to the brief.Exact model, interface and radio combination; project software; local service terms; independent long-term reliability.
PDS TechnologyPDS publishes T8 and T8 Pro mining-dispatch architecture involving the terminal, cameras, vehicle data, communications, positioning and offline records.Relevant when an 8-inch Android in-cab platform and project-defined I/O or positioning are being considered.Controlled configuration, current reports, customer-authorized results, support performance and all scale or reliability claims.
RuggONRuggON publishes mining solutions and vehicle-mounted computer products for harsh environments, including current VORTEX and VULCAN directions.Relevant when mining connectivity, vehicle mounting and a vendor-published rugged device family need comparison.Quoted configuration, software and protocol fit, certifications for the installed build, lifecycle and regional support.
WinmateWinmate publishes mining platforms that include vehicle-mounted workstations, industrial displays, tablets and edge systems for mobile equipment.Relevant when procurement wants to compare several device formats or higher-compute vehicle architectures.Which current model matches the cab, power and I/O; configuration-specific evidence; service and comparative reliability.

Do not treat a ruggedness label as installed evidence

An IP rating covers a defined ingress test boundary. It does not answer whether a connector was sealed during the test, whether the customer harness is included, whether the bracket survives the same vibration, or whether the display remains readable in the actual cab. Ask each supplier to identify the sample revision, test method, port state and report scope. If the machine operates in a hazardous area, request the exact applicable approval; a general mining page is not a hazardous-location certificate.

Compare vehicle power, I/O and software as one system

Count ports only after defining what runs at the same time. A CAN port does not supply the machine message database. A camera connector does not prove the requested signal standard or recording workload. GNSS does not establish RTK performance without receiver, antennas, correction data and state handling. Use the RTK integration checklist where positioning affects dispatch, guidance or machine control.

Software ownership belongs in the same comparison. Record the operating-system build, drivers, SDK or API, application owner, remote update path, recovery method and diagnostic logs. A sample that boots successfully on a desk has not demonstrated recovery after cranking, an interrupted write or a mine-network outage.

Run the same production-intent pilot for every finalist

  • Install the quoted terminal with the intended bracket, harness, antennas and cameras.
  • Exercise cold start, engine cranking, repeated ignition and controlled shutdown.
  • Run all required CAN, serial, Ethernet, video, GNSS and wireless functions together.
  • Check outdoor readability, gloves, operator reach, cable movement and service access.
  • Interrupt network, positioning and machine data; confirm visible degraded states and recovery.
  • Record hardware revision, software image, configuration ID and pass/fail evidence.

The PDS T8, T8 Pro and T10B are examples of PDS starting platforms, not automatic approvals. Send every finalist the same test, and remove any supplier that will not connect the sample to controlled documents.

Normalize price only after scope is equal

Separate the terminal, bracket, harness, antennas, cameras, modem, software work, certification, tooling, samples, logistics and support. A low unit price can hide integration and field-service cost, while a more complete quotation may include items that another bidder omitted. Record unknowns instead of inventing equivalence.

Move from shortlist to a defensible award

A purchase recommendation should name the verified configuration and the reason it fits the project. It should not claim that the selected brand is universally the most reliable. Keep the rejected risks, pilot data, supplier responses and commercial assumptions beside the final scorecard. When the machine brief is ready, ask PDS to respond to the same mining or construction RFQ used for other candidates.
